University of Chicago Chess Club

One of the more active collegiate chess communities around, and one of the easiest to join. Turn up on a Monday evening, take a board, and play whoever’s free. We run rated tournaments through the season too — but nobody has to enter one.

About us

Most of our members are casual players — people who like chess and want to play it sometimes. That describes the majority of the club, and the club is built for it. Nothing about a Monday meeting is structured: play three games, play one, or just watch.

The range in the room is genuinely wide, from people who learned the moves last week to Grandmasters, and they do play each other. We are not an elitist club by any means. Every meeting and event is open to everyone, and there is nothing to sign.

What we do

Play every Monday

Take a board and play whoever’s free. Blitz, long games, and people who are happy to teach you the rest.

Compete, if you want

We send teams to the Collegiate Chess League and the Pan-Ams, and run rated events through the season. Entry is covered.

Teach and take part

Our volunteering chair runs a teaching program and keeps the club connected to the Hyde Park and wider Chicago chess scene.
